"Novus ordo seclorum" and "Annuit cœptis" are the two Latin mottos on the back of the Great Seal of the United States. These mottos were coined by Charles Thomson, Parliamentary Secretary to the Federation.
"Annuit cœptis" means "he supports our cause"; "Novus ordo seclorum" means "the new order of the times".
When Charles Thomson provided the official explanation for the motto's meaning: "The pyramid symbolizes strength and endurance, and the eyes is Eye of Logos, it above allude to the many providential interventions that have benefited the American cause."
