Saint George was an early Christian martyr who is revered as a saint in Christianity. According to tradition, he was a soldier in the Roman army. Of Cappadocian Greek ancestry, he became a member of the Praetorian Guard of the Roman Emperor Diocletian, but was sentenced to death for refusing to renounce his Christian faith. He became one of the most revered saints, heroes and great martyrs in Christianity, and has been especially honoured as a military saint since the Crusades. He is honoured as a martyr of the monotheistic faith by Christians, Druze, and some Muslims.
